Why Are Eggs So Expensive In Arizona?
Egg prices in Arizona have reached an all-time high, with the average price being about 50% higher than last year, according to Julie Murphree, the outreach director for the Arizona Farm Bureau. This increase in egg prices, combined with the overall rising cost of groceries, has caused concern for many Arizona residents.
One major factor contributing to the increase in egg prices is the avian flu, also known as the bird flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has detected nearly 58 million cases of the bird flu in birds across the United States, and although Murphree has not heard of any major egg producers in Arizona being affected by the flu, the tight supply caused by outbreaks in other parts of the country has ultimately led to higher prices for Arizona consumers.

In addition to the avian flu, Murphree cites inflation as another factor contributing to the rising cost of groceries in the state. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Phoenix saw the highest inflation in the country last year, causing food prices to increase by more than 12%.
Despite the high prices, Murphree emphasizes the importance of continuing to include eggs in one’s diet due to their status as a highly economical and nutrient-dense source of protein. She suggests that shoppers try to bargain hunt and buy in bulk when possible, and to focus on purchasing basic, staple items like milk, eggs, and bread in order to save money.
